The emir of Gusau, Alhaji Ibrahim Bello has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for spearheading an awareness and sensitisation on waste management and flood preparedness.
The monarch gave the commendation while receiving NEMA’s delegation who paid him homage in his palace in Gusau .
The delegation led by the Head of Operations NEMA Sokoto office, Aliyu Shehu Kafindangi, was at the Emir’s palace as part of the two-day activities of its awareness and workshop on waste management and flood preparedness.
The two-day event is titled: “Sensitisation and Public Awareness Campaign on Proper Waste Management and Flood Preparedness”.
The traditional ruler particularly appreciated the effort of NEMA for its timely intervention in bringing the awareness to the grassroot level.
“I appreciate your visit, I am happy with the recognition we always received from the NEMA.
“We are ever ready to support you and mobilize our people especially at grassroots for you to reach them easily”.
“We deeply appreciate the recognition that we always get from NEMA,’ the emir added.
Kafindangi said the two-day sensitisation programme was to educate the general public on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of refuse on waterways and gutters.
“We have visited public places including Gusau central market, where we shared pamphlets and posters to residents of Gusau at major public places for easy dissemination of messages on waste management and flood preparedness”, he added.
The agency also organised a public sensitisation lecture for stakeholders on preparedness against flood and waste management.
Speaking at the lecture, Kafindangi stressed the need to sensitise communities on proactive measures to avert flooding.
He cautioned against building on waterways and dumping of waste in drains, adding that the state government would consider relocating communities living in flood-prone areas.
The participants of the lecture included traditional rulers, religious and community leaders, youths groups, among others.
