Following the need to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on environmental sustainability, climate change and justice, children in Kaduna State have committed to greening secondary schools across the state as well as homes.

The children made this commitment during the commemoration of World Environmental Day in Zaria as pupils of primary to secondary ages across five schools, initiated SDG Clubs to ensure sustainable environmental practice.

Khadija A. Abdullahi, one of the students from Demonstration Secondary School in Zaria, hailed students for coming together to commit to the environment saying that they will plant five hundred trees within the year to ensure that schools in Kaduna State remain green.

“We have made history today by taking this initiative to establish Green School Network in Kaduna. Our goal within the first year is to plant five hundred trees across twenty schools in Kaduna State and to ensure that these trees bud”

“It is our hope to have Green School Network in our region and to ensure that we fight climate change. This is the time to recruit young people into matters of the environment and to train them to become advocate of climate justice”, she said.

On his part, the Executive Director of Creative Arts for Development Centre, Frank Zaure noted that one of the goals of the SDGs is to leave no one behind saying that this is one way children can be facilitated to become active instigators of climate justice.

“Young people are waking up to the call of climate justice and as leaders we must begin to support initiatives such as this on to ensure that we achieve the SDGs before 2030. Five hundred trees in a year is achievable in Kaduna State for these children and we are ready to support them to go for one thousand in the following year”, he said.
