An expert from Department of Environmental Science, Kaduna Polytechnic, Dr. Abdulkadir Rabiu Salisu has called on the government at all levels to make provisions of enough refuse dumps site and temporary areas in order to reduce the effect of climate change in Nigeria.

Dr. Salisu made the call during the weekend while speaking on ‘Impact of Climate Change on Eco-environment in Africa’ , a program organized by Africa Institute of Waste Management and Environmental Studies (AIWMES) in collaboration with Africa Climate Change Reporters.

He advised Nigerians to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse in waterways, saying that the effect of flood affects everybody not only those in riverine areas, he said

According to him, if government can provide enough refuse dumps areas in all nooks and crannies of the country, flooding will reduce.

He lamented that flood claimed over 500 lives in Nigeria from January to October, saying that the effect of flood is devastating.

Dr. Salisu appealed to the government to make cooking gas available and affordable for Nigerians in order to reduce cutting down of trees.

The Director, Africa Climate Change Reporters, Mallam Nurudeen Bello urged Journalists to always report environmental issues.

According to him, environmental issues are underreported, saying that some Journalists report politics only, while lives are been lost on daily basis due to effect of climate change.

He therefore called on the federal government to settle issues with Cameronian government in order not to experience another flooding in the coming years.
