Former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Ango Abdullahii said it’s unacceptable for Nigerians to wait on the pleasure of legislators or the presidency on serious issues which represent genuine improvement in the nation’s governance structures.
The former VC and convener of northern elders forum (NEF) made the remarks in a speech at the Northern people’s forum held in kaduna.
He said that Nigerian citizens could vastly improved their mobilization of economic resources, reduce inefficiencies and waste, and improved effective governance if the issue of restructuring would be taken more seriously.
Ango said in the event that those elected to represent Nigerians did not believe in what the people needed,
Nigerians should encouraged a citizens-driven to their foundations and systems, and democratically put in place leaders who’ll address them as matters of national survival or collapsed.
” In this regards we advise those who conflate the vital national imparrative to restructure with issues of rotation or zoning the presidency to avoid doing major injury to our future as a nation.”,he said.
Accordingt to him, no one will quarry with the decision of any political party to zone political offices and canvassed for votes around them, adding that those party’s who agreed on zoning should also have the responsibility to convinced Nigerians over the utility and other values behind them.
“The basic right of Nigerians to vote for candidates of their choices cannot be taken away by the threats or blackmail. Northern votes have supported three Southerners, Abiolo,, Obasanjo and Jonathan to victory in the past.
Northerners voters are enlightened and conscious of their responsibilities.
“They’ve learnt , perhaps at greater than most Nigerians, that ethnicity and faith alone do not make good leaders.”, he stated.
NEF convener further maintained that the north will not accept to be further weakened so that they abandon the same rights all Nigerians enjoyed.
Je also stated that those politicians who want Northerners to vote in a particular manner should soil their boots and convinced the Northerners how their candidate would improved security in the north and the country.
